I came across this green roof technology / planter boxes drainage which will help with the drainage of the plants.  Without proper drainage, water will not flow properly and will cause ponding. This is not good especially for buildings.

Traditionally here in Philippines,  we use gravel for the drainage layer. This is very heavy and has a tendency to block the free flowing water.  Sometimes, installers will lessen the gravel so cut on cost which will make it inefficient. Of course building owners/developers will suffer in the end.

The product is created by Vertigrow . They call it VG-30 Draincell. The way to install this is simply by wrapping the draincells with filtercloth. No need to fabricate or carry heavy loads anymore. The weight of drain cell is almost negligible since it less than 3kg per square meter. Usually it is by the hundreds of kilos due to the weight of gravel and sand.  Not to mentioned the weight if it is wet.  You just need to worry about the weight of the substrate to be used.

I am hoping that someday Philippines will be a garden city like Singapore. It took them 50 years to  accomplish this and still working hard to achieve more.
